The minister of information, Lai Mohammed has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s rice revolution is enough for him to be re-elected in 2019. Mohammed noted that the project has taken a lot of Nigeria out of poverty and that he deserves to be re-elected.

Daily Independent reports that the minister spoke in Lagos on Monday, April 2 saying 60 per cent of the rice eaten in the country was produced locally. He said: “The agricultural revolution in general and the rice revolution, in particular, have taken millions of Nigerians out of poverty. As a matter of fact, today, 60% of rice eaten in Nigeria is produced in Nigeria. In the words of the rice processors, the rice revolution alone is enough to guarantee re-election for President Buhari, if he decides to run again!” “We want to use this opportunity to appeal to Nigerians to complement the efforts of the government by consuming only locally-grown and processed rice. It is fresher. It is tastier. It is healthier. It has not spent months on the high seas and warehouses.”

“We don’t know where or how imported rice is made or how old it is? It is reported that most of the rice dumped on us are old and probably rejects. The citizens of those countries do not eat this rice. The citizens of Benin also do not eat it. But they send it to us. Unhealthy foods are dangerous to health. So let’s eat what we can vouch for”. “But Nigerians should remember that every time they eat imported rice, they are eating the jobs that would have been created for Nigerians and instead funding the creation of jobs in the source countries. Just imagine that less than three years into the rice revolution, millions of jobs have been created in the whole value chain”. “It is important for Nigerians to know that when they consume imported rice, they are creating jobs in India and Thailand and destroying jobs across our country. Today we have rice farmers in all states and all geopolitical zones. In fact, most of us have friends and relatives who are farming rice. So if we don’t patronize their product, we are destroying their livelihoods”. “In this regard, we are embarking on a massive nationwide campaign to sensitize our compatriots to the need to support the rice revolution by consuming local rice. Nigerians are patriots. They want more jobs.

They will support the rice revolution and Nigeria will become Self-sufficient in rice sooner than we have started” Meanwhile, Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi state said that in two and half years, rice production has risen from 5.7 to 17 million metric tonnes per annum, Leadership reports. NAIJ.com gathered that he made the disclosure to State House correspondents after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa. According to the Kebbi state governor, eight new rice mills were commissioned last year which has increased rice production in the country.

2019: Why I want to be Nigeria’s President – Sule Lamido

A former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, on Thursday said his presidential ambition was not out of desperation for power, but for genuine service to the people of Nigeria.

Former Jigawa State Gov. Sule Lamido

Mr. Lamido made the statement in Lagos during a meeting with members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
He said his decision to contest for the number one seat in the country was out of commitment to fix the country and reposition it for greatness.
The former governor said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had not done well in government, and so must be flushed out in the next election.

Mr. Lamido said the country had not fared better in security, economy and anti -graft war, on which they anchored their manifesto.
He cited the herdsmen killings and the resurgence of Boko Haram attrocities as some of the failings of the present government.
Mr. Lamido said the abduction of Dapchi schoolgirls, who were eventually returned, reflected the lack of capacity of the present government government to ensure security.
He urged the PDP to put its acts together to defeat the APC in 2019.

“We in the PDP should put our acts together and ensure we flush APC out in 2019.
“God would judge us if we allow the APC to return to power,” the ex-governor who is being prosecuted for corruption, said.
Mr. Lamido urged the would-be delegates to the PDP national convention to look out for merit, consistency and loyalty to the party in choosing the party’s presidential candidate.
He said he was eminently qualified to pick the party ‘s ticket as he was consistent, committed and an avowed member of the PDP.

Mr. Lamido thanked members of the Lagos PDP for the warm reception accorded him and thanked the party chairman in the state for facilitating his coming to Lagos.
He said he once worked in Lagos and felt at home being with the PDP family in the state.
In his comments, the state party chairman, Moshood Salvador, said members were delighted to have Lamido in their midst.
He said the high turnout at the reception showed how much members loved him.

Mr. Salvador dismissed the insinuations in some quarters that PDP was divided in the state.
He said the fact that party executives across the state were at the reception meant that PDP in the state was one.
“PDP is not divided in the state. All the council excos are here. Everybody is here. The party is not divided.
“Whatever bad people are saying about the party in the state is nothing but all lies,” he said.

Mr. Salvador said he had done a lot to reposition the party since he was elected, and the spirit in the party was very high.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Lamido was accompanied on the visit by former Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onomalemen, among others.
